  1. I love to go to the hardware store and get Forget-Me-Not Seed packets, I then make stickers using my Ink Jet printer promoting my latest promotion or website and slap it on the back! It’s something they can use and each time they look at the flowers that it will grow, hopefully they will Forget-Me-Not!

  3. so hard…i come up with new ideas ALL the time. I think the most important thing is branding. Getting the BurnTees name out there as much as possible whether thru a forum, blog, twitter, facebook, etc. Just getting as much exposure to the name as possible.

  5. Don’t jump into spending money on advertising or marketing until you’ve explored the free options that are available, especially if you’re just starting out or are starting a new project.

  7. Paint your car (laugh) … seriously, check out my URL. I did this for several years. It is best for shops with a “local” theme though. I tested a number of sites and the biggest bump in traffic came from when I had a Niagara theme on the car. There are tips on the link for doing your own paint job.

  9. It is much better to have a good, relevant domain name, hosted on a proper server – not a free one – and to use an email address from that domain. It makes everything look so much more professional.

  11. Have a sincere interest in – if not a full blown passion for what it is – you are trying to spread a message about. It’s a lot easier to share a message about something you love, and potential audiences can often sense when a message isn’t genuine.

  13. It’s summer and the coats are coming off and people are headed out to carnivals and festivals. Wear a tshirt and carry a totebag that has your url on it! Especially if you have a site that is relevant to the theme of the outing. Like going to a car show (indoors or out ๐Ÿ™‚ ) wear a shirt with your Cool-Car-Photos.com url on it AND have biz cards to hand out to the people that may stop you. Give biz cards to the people that look interested or that are showing their cars. Online advertising is one way to do things, offline is a whole other ball game that has a LOT of potential.

  15. Start a weblog and STICK WITH IT. Even if you only post once a week, consistency with updates will start to solidify your presence on the web. Before long you’ll have lots of excellent archives too – search engines love sites with content that are updated regularly. ๐Ÿ™‚

  17. When you hit a wall and want to give up, make a list of things you can control in a given marketing promotion and a list of things you can’t control. If you knock out the items on the “I can control these” list then that is all you can do. Didn’t do them? Do ’em!

  19. Build a network of promotion channels such as multiple blogs and squidoo lenses. Experiment with different channels/sites to see which bring the best traffic. when your experiments happen to find a promotion method that gets results for your shops repeat it 5-10-50 times, don’t waste time on the ones that dont produce results and keep watching for new promo opportunities.

  23. Whatever everyone else is doing – try to be different! Marketing and Ads should not “blend” into their surroundings, they should stand out.

Also – Don’t be afraid of good old cheap offline tactics like strategically placed business cards, brochures posters, bumperstickers, sidewalk chalk etc.

    Be persistent, but real.

  25. Make sure you are marketing what people want to buy. Did I hear a DOH!! Look at the Big 3 car manufactures in the US – are they selling what people want? No – they are selling what they want you to buy. People are buying hybrids and the Big 3 are pushing V8 engines. Don’t be so committed to your product that you fail to recognize if it is still viable

  27. Market more offline. 50% of people still don’t shop online, that is huge. Flyers in grocery stores and community centers and on college campuses still get attention. Really ๐Ÿ™‚ I know, how 80’s is that? Go take a look yourself…

  29. Pens.

Everyone has business cards… a few years ago, I started buying boxes of 100 pens with my name, URL, etc. on them. When I would hand them out at events, people would always say, “Cool! I need a pen, I don’t have one on me.” Useful, and sticks with them ๐Ÿ˜‰

This is something I just posted to my blog. My sister never went to school for marketing but she had the natural instinct to think outside the box. I have always been amazed at her ability to look at things differently.

I remember once my younger sister Deborah had a litter of kittens she needed to find homes for. So she put an ad in the newspaper that she was giving the kittens away for free. She didnโ€™t get one phone call. Now I would have thought like most people no one wanted kittens. The next week she put an ad in the paper kittens ten dollars each. Well the surprise is that she had people calling and they were very disappointed because she sold all the kittens. So what does this tell us about Marketing? I believe it means that she didnโ€™t place a value on the kittens at first so no one else did either. Actually that isnโ€™t just a lesson about Marketing that is a lesson about life.

    ?

Another lesson I learned from her was when she was writing songs, she is a great song writer. She was sending out demo tapes to different publishers. I happened to notice that the label on her tape was an ugly shade of yellow. I asked her why she had picked that color. She told me that she had gone to the store and asked for the least popular color because she knew her tape would stand out from the huge pile of tapes the companies receive. Talk about standing out in the crowd that is what we all strive for. So I hope all you artists take that to heart so I can use the pretty colored envelopes!!

Thanks Deborah for your marketing expertise.
