Kats n Keyboards

A friend of mine and I were chatting this morning. Mid-conversation her cat hopped on the keyboard and said hello to me.

Work before the cat

Now, I have kids that do the same… and as entertaining as it was, it reminded us both of how cats seem to plop themselves right in the middle of our productivity.

Why?

Maybe I was making progress. Maybe I was on a brilliant roll of wow.

(probably not, as I was chatting, not working.. but that’s not the point)

Are cats so eager to hop in the midst of our whatever-we’re-doings because they know us better than we know ourselves?  We work too hard and they’re reminding us to stop to take a breath?

Or maybe, could it be that we should stop and learn from the cats.. work hard, then nap hard?

Or, is it merely because they like to be in the center of attention?… and while we’re working, the attention is on that keyboard.

Hard at Work - cat on keyboard

I’m not sure. I do know know, however, that rather than become irritated, we should stop and enjoy a little cat nap ourselves… maybe no mid morning, but at some point in the day we should take a break. The work will be here when we get back. besides, it’s good to rejuvenate the creative juices and the masterful planning mind… even if it is only for 5 minutes.

What else do you suppose the cat on the keyboard can teach us today?

Find this cartoon on great t-shirts and goodies to show off your cat like work ethic.

  1. Well Jen, I just got off the phone with Stanley who told me the REAL reason he plays on my computer! Not satisfied with playing with the mouse, sticking his tail in my tea mug or knocking my designs all over the the floor and poking me in the eye with his Andy Rooney whiskers, he’s key BORED!!!! Who Knew?

  4. I think you make a good point jen!

Cats are wonderful teachers and friends. And I don’t know where I’d be without my three constant companions when I sit down to work for the day: one to lay on top of the monitor just in case it has a notion to take off before work is done, one to lay across my keyboard on his back and stare at me in case I take anything but him too seriously, and one to test my beverage, repeatedly, for anything suspicious. They’ve always got my back.

My three companions and I know that at the end of the day, we’ve all earned our treats.

A typical day with these three:

  7. Cats are just crazy!
I’ve had cats since I was about 8 and doubt them going away anytime soon. I haven’t had one lay on my keyboard yet but they sure do bug me when I’m trying to work. hehe
I posted a blog (on my brand new blog!) on cats, I’m almost out of time to post it here. Pacific standard time ends in about 7 minutes :p
